Badman Pondo, Biography

Badman Pondo is the alias of Shittu Usman Damilare, an eager beaver turned oracle whose sermons of street life and trench bustles are often relayed through dour Afro-adura tunes and experimental specimens of Afrobeats sensations alike. The weaning talent rose out of creative hibernation in February 2022 with his debut EP, Comfort Zone, a six-track project that validated Pondo’s decision to leave his comfort zone and take his music career by the horns. He however wasn’t going to let his year of emergence go without serving his fans something else to hold on to, and this led to the release of two consecutive singles, Lately and Dimension in October and November 2022 respectively. It should however be noted that Pondo had been around for a while as his first ever appearance on a track was in 2020 as a featured artist on the opening track of Dreymakanaki’s EP titled “Sonorous Sound”. As a testament to his reputation as an eager beaver, Pondo likewise made a busy year out of 2023 with his debut solo album The Dreamer, putting legacy-stamping hits like Ayo and World (a brilliant sample of Chief Sikiru Ayinde Barrister‘s “Aiye”) on the eight-course menu. He sealed the year with Billi, an Afrobeats single with an experimental Yoruba monkey tale which also got an acapella version. It is however unforgivable to write this piece without making a reference to the bromance between Badman Pondo and the fast-rising star, Bhadboi OML. In 2024, the duo made their first magic with OML getting featured on Pondo’s genre-defying single hit, Update. The duo would later produce the pivoting track of Pondo’s career in Life, the second track on Pondo’s second album Close to Fame, released in 2024. The album also enlists main course meals including Psalm 91/Surah Al falaq (a successful fusion of Afro-adura and Amapiano) and IG amongst other tantalising tunes on the menu. Complimentary singles including Alone, Pain and Halle also helped to clear all doubts of fans eating good from Pondo’s broth in 2024. In February 2025, the singer opened the floor with a traditional surreal vibe on Gbajumo and a bonus acapella variant. He retains possession of this self-acclaimed floor in June with Brag bearing the flag as his latest single. This is however bound to change soon as the baton might soon be passed to the mysterious track that is currently responsible for the unruly buzz, dance challenges and massive attention that’s been bringing a positive Tiktok mob action on Pondo recently. King Sunny Ade at 79: Celebrating a Living Legacy

Today marks the 79th birthday of King Sunny Ade, christened Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, a two-time Grammy-nominated Nigerian musical legend whose career has become an object of study in brilliance, finesse, and daring accomplishments. Born on September 22, 1946, King Sunny Ade has established himself as one of the most compelling and influential voices to ever come out of his generation and influence tens of generations to come. With a style so unique he took the crown for it, King Sunny Ade makes jùjú music that traps native music rigor and defies cultural sentiment with equal command. King Sunny Adé first captured attention in Nigeria with his hit single “Challenge Cup“, released in 1967, hereby delivering him as a major force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music scene. This also earned him the “King of Juju” title in the late 1970s, though, having been born into a royal family, his status as a Yoruba Prince also authenticates the title “King”. However, his international breakthrough didn’t come until 1982 when Producer Martin Meissonnier introduced King Sunny Adé to Chris Blackwell, former record producer and founder of Island Records. Hereby facilitating the release of the album Juju Music under Island Records label. This album and its immediate sibling, Synchro System released in 1983 which earned him his first Grammy-nomination in the Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording category, are responsible for launching both King Sunny Adé and Juju music to a global exosphere.HIs second nomination however came in 1999 for the album ODU in the Best World Music Album category.   Perhaps, one of the most fascinating things about him is his prowess as multi-instrumentalist. Most efficient with the guitar and Keyboard, King Sunny Adé is also responsible for introducing percussion instruments like the talking drum, pedal steel guitar, synthesisers, clavinet and vibraphone into Juju music. At 79, King Sunny Adé remains a youth, both in physicality and career-wise. He remains a symbol of possibilities and a testament to the relevance of dreams. Happy Birthday to the living legacy, happy birthday to the music legend, King Sunny Adé. @Alaro Basit

Music Run with Ayo Maff

The Nascent Storming the Nigerian music scene with confidence backed by an electrifying street credibility, Ayo Maff was initially perceived as another Afro-Adura artiste ready to take the genre by its horns with his debut single “JamaJama“. But little did the Nigerian music audience know that “Omo owo” still has a lot of tricks up his emerging sleeve. The Ballistic Dispersal No one saw it coming, the explosion that followed. A chart-quaking banger from a young, hungry-for-success, street lad and Afrobeat’s lover boy, Fireboy. For Ayo Maff, Dealer wasn’t just a track, but a bridge to the Canaan of industry fame. The Rise of the Mafia(Maffian) There aren’t many artists that can instigate a chain reaction with their debut album like Ayo Maff did with “Maffian“.The Nigerian music industry watched a juvenile movement erupt before its very eyes with a seven-track album that mirrored swag, hustle, street life and youthful exuberance. All led by a career that is almost not up to two years. The Self-Proclamation Naming his most recent album with a title that is almost impossible to dispute, to say Ayo Maff is truly the “Prince of the Street” should not spark up a debate on an objective table. This is also the album where his fruit of versatility ripens. Delivering distinct features like “Realness” with the ever-emotional Chike and an explosive vibe on Gang with Seyi Vibez in one wholesome album, Ayo Maff keeps scaling the metrics of fulfillment as far as the Nigerian music industry is concerned. But the icing on the cake really is that, if he is this young and potential-pregnant already, what more does a roaring engine promise other than to conquer the road? Guess we will find out pretty soon. @Alaro Basit

He’s gone, but his voice remains – Two years without Mohbad

We’re remembering Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as “Mohbad” today, on the second anniversary of his passing. He was a morning grace the before the untimely clouds of death deprived the Nigerian music scene of him. Now leaving behind not only his soul-stirring songs, but also many unanswered questions. On September 12, 2023, Mohbad died under very fishy circumstances that immediately raised concern, grief, and uproar from his fans and the society at large. Though, investigations have gone a great length, including exhumation, autopsy and coroner’s inquest, two after, the mysteries behind his sudden demise remain uncovered. Key Concerns and Developments The main object of concern remains that the cause of death still remains officially inconclusive. While medical reports suggest that possible drug reaction or fatal anaphylactic shock may be responsible, the level of decomposition of the body has made it difficult to come to definite conclusions. Legal and procedural bureaucracies: Although an auxiliary nurse was identified as a “prime suspect”, formal charges and accountability metrics are still stalling for not very obvious reasons. Paternity questions and controversies: Mohbad’s death led to a series of uncanny speculations and famiky tensions, one of which is the dire doubt about the paternity of his purported son, Liam. This area remains dark and unsolved as his baby mama, Omowunmi Aloba refuses to consent to a DNA test. Call to Action As we mark this painful anniversary, we hope to see the fog cleared on the following: 1. Full transparency in the investigation process—from forensic reports, autopsy results, to court proceedings. 2. Speed and integrity from the legal quarters concerned. 3. Prompt resolution of family tensions ensuing from paternity doubts, and; 4. Unhinged support for Mohbad’s legacy, he was too good of a talent to have his legacy swept under the carpet of death. We hope that his contributions to music and culture be duly honoured Today, we remember not just the artist, but the young soul who dared to aspire and weave truth into melodies that touched souls. Just as his name implies “Imole”, we pray that his light continues to shine, and that his death be not in vain. @Alaro Basit

ASUU Directs Members to Begin Nationwide Strike:

ASUU Directs Members to Begin Nationwide Strike The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that a directive has been issued for all branches of the union nationwide to withdraw their services over the delay in the payment of June 2025 salaries to its members, citing the enforcement of “No Pay, No Work” resolution. ASUU branches in two federal universities, the University of Jos and the University of Abuja, have already commenced strike action in compliance with the directive. President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, who confirmed the development to Tribune Online on Monday in Abuja, said what the institutions are doing is simply enforcing a National Executive Council (NEC) resolution of the union that any month in which salaries are delayed beyond three days, members should withdraw their services until the salaries are paid. Piwuna lamented the lackadaisical attitude of government officials toward the issue of lecturers’ salaries, which he described as a paltry amount. He explained that since the migration of university workers from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), union members have experienced significant hardship due to salary delays. He, however, noted that the issue of salary delays is the immediate challenge facing union members and warned that the outstanding N10 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) should be released promptly by the government to avoid another round of struggle. He noted that the Federal Government was supposed to pay lecturers N50 billion in outstanding EAA but only released N40 billion, leaving a balance of N10 billion. cc: Mike_Media
