Meet Afrobeat’s Retrobaby, Major AJ

Born in Benue State, Nigeria to parents hailing from two different ethnicities, Chocolate City’s signee, Ajogwu Boluwatife Vincent, going with the stage name Major AJ, stands out with a sound that is a fusion of diverse cultural elements.

A Nigerian Afro-fusion singer, songwriter, and rapper, Major AJ discovered his love for music during his early years as an only child accompanying his mom and grandmother to church rehearsals where he developed a penchant for playing the piano. His journey in the music industry is complemented by an unwavering spirit, zeal & passion especially if we’re to put into consideration the challenges he faced growing up in Kainji town, Benue State with limited access to resources. Having found divine inspiration in artists like Burna Boy who also faced similar tribulations in Port Harcourt, Major AJ remains undaunted and confident in his music prowess.

A graduate of Computer Science at the University of Ilorin, though he took a caesura from music due to academic workload, his heart remained with music and this became evident in 2020 when he released his first single, “Terminator,” produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Telz and followed up with his 2021 release, “Salo,” which caught the attention of Chocolate City Music and earned him a record deal. 2022 came with the Retroverse EP, a blend of 70s/80s funk, pop, and African live instruments. His most recent project, BadBoy Major, EP released in 2024 however fortified his grip on the contemplating music industry as a force to be reckoned with and having made dazzling collaborations with top stars including Blaqbonez, Young Jonn, TAR1Q, Minz, Psycho YP, Crayon and others, there is no doubt that he is the very promising future of Afro-fusion.
