The anti-CGI director – Christopher Nolan

It is no news that Christopher Nolan is a movie director renowned for his preference for practical effects over heavy CGI effects.

So for Interstellar (2014), he needed a realistic setting for Cooper’s farm, where Matthew McConaughey’s character lived with his family and rather than relying on visual effects or renting an existing farm, Nolan and his production team decided to grow their own corn.

Key Notables:

  • – Reports have it that they actually planted 500 acres (not just 20!) of corn in Alberta, Canada but used less than 20 during the film production.
  • – The idea is a result of the lesson Nolan learnt from a movie he earlier produced, “Man of Steel” that cornfields can be grown fairly quickly under the right conditions.
  • – The corn was grown specifically for the film, as it was used as a backdrop for the farmhouse and chase scenes.
  • – After filming, Nolan made sure to harvest and sell the corn, hereby yielding remarkable profit for the production in the long run.
