Badman Pondo, Biography

Badman Pondo is the alias of Shittu Usman Damilare, an eager beaver turned oracle whose sermons of street life and trench bustles are often relayed through dour Afro-adura tunes and experimental specimens of Afrobeats sensations alike. The weaning talent rose out of creative hibernation in February 2022 with his debut EP, Comfort Zone, a six-track project that validated Pondo’s decision to leave his comfort zone and take his music career by the horns. He however wasn’t going to let his year of emergence go without serving his fans something else to hold on to, and this led to the release of two consecutive singles, Lately and Dimension in October and November 2022 respectively. It should however be noted that Pondo had been around for a while as his first ever appearance on a track was in 2020 as a featured artist on the opening track of Dreymakanaki’s EP titled “Sonorous Sound”. As a testament to his reputation as an eager beaver, Pondo likewise made a busy year out of 2023 with his debut solo album The Dreamer, putting legacy-stamping hits like Ayo and World (a brilliant sample of Chief Sikiru Ayinde Barrister‘s “Aiye”) on the eight-course menu. He sealed the year with Billi, an Afrobeats single with an experimental Yoruba monkey tale which also got an acapella version. It is however unforgivable to write this piece without making a reference to the bromance between Badman Pondo and the fast-rising star, Bhadboi OML. In 2024, the duo made their first magic with OML getting featured on Pondo’s genre-defying single hit, Update. The duo would later produce the pivoting track of Pondo’s career in Life, the second track on Pondo’s second album Close to Fame, released in 2024. The album also enlists main course meals including Psalm 91/Surah Al falaq (a successful fusion of Afro-adura and Amapiano) and IG amongst other tantalising tunes on the menu. Complimentary singles including Alone, Pain and Halle also helped to clear all doubts of fans eating good from Pondo’s broth in 2024. In February 2025, the singer opened the floor with a traditional surreal vibe on Gbajumo and a bonus acapella variant. He retains possession of this self-acclaimed floor in June with Brag bearing the flag as his latest single. This is however bound to change soon as the baton might soon be passed to the mysterious track that is currently responsible for the unruly buzz, dance challenges and massive attention that’s been bringing a positive Tiktok mob action on Pondo recently. 6 Things every Upcoming Artist should(must) know

6 Things Every Upcoming Artist Should(must) know You aspire to move from the status of an upcoming artist to a “blown” artist, you practice a lot, you watch tutorial videos, and you study other people’s arts…but you don’t seem to be making any progress. You work so hard on a project but you don’t see the results you were hoping for and then you begin to reason, “perhaps I’m wasting my time”. There are some reasons why things are this way. You could simply be doing things wrong. So, what things should you do better as an upcoming artist? HOW GOOD IS YOUR CRAFT?: Music is a career that requires you to have some basic skills, such as singing and songwriting. Before you follow a music career, do you have these skills, even though these days, people employ the services of ghostwriters, can you afford one? Sharpen your skills before you choose a career in music and let people enjoy your songs. BE ORIGINAL AND CREATIVE: As an artist, you have to be creative in the project and songs you release. Can you be authentic enough to record a song without copying another artist’s method? You have to be original, let your inspiration come from within, and be different. People get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again, so you ask yourself, how can I be different? SELF-BELIEF: As an artist, people will always criticize your work and put it under a lot of scrutinies, do you have enough confidence and courage in your craft to receive such corrections You have to be courageous in your music, be prepared to defend your songs, and protect wherever you find yourself. PUSH YOURSELF TO BECOME NOTICEABLE: Promotion is an underrated thing in the music industry today. You cannot be noticed by any “big” music labels if you’re not ready to spend every last dime promoting your music. Make considerable amounts of effort in promoting your music personally on your social media pages, YouTube and music platforms. KNOW YOUR PLACE: The popular phrase, “Pride goes before a fall”, should be handled with more seriousness as an upcoming artist. You’re an upcoming artist, not a “blown” artist, therefore behave as such. Don’t act rich when you’re broke. Use every opportunity to showcase yourself and your craft. ENGAGE PEOPLE ON YOUR PAGE: Fans and well-wishers will come to your page to praise your work and tag you on their stories, make sure you engage these people, they’ll form the strong fanbase you will later rely on in the future. Make sure to build your fanbase right from this scratch, reply to people, and be active on your social media platforms. Calm yourself down, believe in your craft, and be ready to spend on promotions. Even the big artists still pay influencers and do promotions. Artists should know their craft, understand their style, and believe in it. Be a studio rat, be ready to take corrections and criticisms, and encourage yourself. The sky will be your starting point.
