Did you know that Major League Baseball umpires are required to wear black underwear?​ This is a written rule, and the reason is surprisingly practical: it’s to ensure they are prepared in case their trousers split during a game. Since their uniforms are dark, black underwear provides a “seamless” look that saves them from a very public wardrobe malfunction while they’re crouched behind home plate.

The original cup, a silver bowl, was purchased in 1892 for just ten guineas (about $50 at the time) and was meant for Canada’s top amateur hockey team. The trophy has a rich history and a unique tradition: every member of the winning team gets to spend a personal 24-hour period with the Cup during the summer. It has been filled with everything from champagne to dog food, and used for baptisms!
